Today’s gamer vocabulary word is “fanboy”.
A passionate fan of various elements of geek culture (e.g. sci-fi, comics, Star Wars, video games, anime, hobbits, Magic: the Gathering, etc.), but who lets his passion override social graces.
The term fanboy is normally used in a derogatory manner. It insinuates the person is blindly enthusiastic about something without being able to see its obvious flaws.
You will see this term used a lot in two areas.
- “Console wars”- A new generation of consoles started recently. There are people who are passionate about either the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4. You will see the term “fanboy” used against both sides when defending their chosen platform.
- Reviews- Reviewers will be accused of being fanboys when they give a score higher than the accuser feels is deserved. This is especially apparent with big budget games like Call of Duty.
